How to use ChatGPT for options trading with real market data
By OptionClaws · Updated 2026-09-28
ChatGPT is good at explaining options: what a credit spread is, why theta decays faster near expiration, how assignment works. What it cannot do on its own is look at today's option chains. Ask plain ChatGPT for the best covered calls this week and it will either decline, recall prices from its training data, or produce numbers that look plausible and are not real. OptionClaws fixes that gap. Once you add the OptionClaws app to ChatGPT, a request like "find cash-secured puts on large caps with a probability of profit above 80%" becomes an actual scan on market data refreshed intraday, and ChatGPT gets back a ranked list of real trades with their max loss, breakeven, and probability of profit. This guide covers what changes when you connect it, how to set it up, what to ask, and what the results mean.
Key facts
- Without a data connection, ChatGPT has no live option chains; any strike, premium, or implied volatility it quotes is recalled or invented.
- With the OptionClaws app, ChatGPT runs real scans on market data refreshed intraday and returns up to 25 ranked trades (15 by default).
- Each result includes the legs, net credit or debit, max profit, max loss, breakevens, probability of profit, days to expiration, and IV rank.
- Every OptionClaws tool is read-only. ChatGPT can find and explain trades; it cannot place, modify, or cancel an order.
- Setup takes a minute from the OptionClaws listing in ChatGPT; scans need an OptionClaws trial or subscription, and new accounts get a 7-day trial with no card.
What ChatGPT gets wrong about options on its own
A language model answers from patterns in its training data. Option prices change every trading minute, and a model's training data ends months before you ask. So when you ask plain ChatGPT for a specific trade, the honest answer is that it does not know the current bid and ask, the current implied volatility, or which strikes are even listed for next month's expiration.
Web search helps a little. ChatGPT can look up a stock quote or a headline, but a search result is not an option chain, and it cannot pull every chain in the market, price thousands of candidate spreads, and rank them. That is the part that turns an idea into a trade list, and it is exactly the part a chat model cannot do from memory.
The failure mode to watch for is confident precision: a strike, a premium to the cent, and a probability that were never looked up. If a number in a chat reply did not come from a tool call, treat it as a placeholder, not a quote.
What changes when OptionClaws is connected
OptionClaws is an options scanner. It enumerates trades across 23 strategies, from covered calls and cash-secured puts to credit spreads, iron condors, straddles, butterflies, calendars, and diagonals, prices each one from quotes refreshed intraday, and filters and ranks them by the metrics you choose. The ChatGPT app exposes that scanner as a set of tools ChatGPT can call on your behalf.
In practice, ChatGPT stops guessing and starts translating. It turns your sentence into a scan definition (strategy, filters, sort order), runs it on OptionClaws servers, and reads back the ranked rows. Because each row also reports its actual value for every filter the scan applied, ChatGPT can tell you why a trade made the list, not just that it did.
- run_preset_scan runs one of 20 curated presets, such as Wheel Candidates or Iron Condor, 2-ATR Profit Zone.
- run_scan runs a custom definition built from your request, with any of the scanner's filters and sort keys.
- get_symbol_details pulls one stock's stats, IV rank, earnings and dividend dates, and an option chain with bid, ask, IV, and greeks.
- run_saved_scan re-runs a scan you saved in the OptionClaws web app, and search_symbols finds a ticker from a company name.
Add OptionClaws to your AI assistant
Works in ChatGPT and Claude, on the web, and in the iOS and Android apps. No card needed for the trial.
How to add OptionClaws to ChatGPT
You need an OptionClaws account to sign in. Running scans requires an active trial or subscription; a new account starts a 7-day trial with no card required.
- Open the OptionClaws listing in ChatGPT. The link is on the OptionClaws connect page.
- Add the plugin and sign in to OptionClaws when prompted.
- Ask for a scan, or mention OptionClaws by name in any chat.
Using a custom connector instead
If you would rather wire it up yourself, turn on Developer mode under Settings, Apps & Connectors, Advanced settings, then create a connector with the OptionClaws MCP server URL (shown on the connect page) and OAuth. OpenAI offers this on Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise, and Edu plans. Either way, ChatGPT signs in to your OptionClaws account with OAuth, so you never paste an API key into a chat.
Prompts to try
Plain English works. Be specific about the strategy, the risk you will accept, and the time window, because those map directly to filters. Vague prompts get broad scans; tight prompts get short, useful lists.
- "Find me high-probability iron condors on large caps with a max loss under $500."
- "Scan for weekly covered calls on my watchlist with annualized return over 20%."
- "What cash-secured puts on blue chips expire in 30 to 45 days with PoP above 80%?"
- "Run the Bull Put Spreads on Oversold Stocks preset and skip anything with earnings before expiration."
- "Show me the option chain for the top result and explain why the short strike was chosen."
What comes back, and how to read it
Each scan returns the top rows sorted by the scan's sort key, one row per symbol by default, plus the total number of matches. A row lists the symbol and company, the strategy, each leg in plain text (side, quantity, expiration, strike, and price), and a set of metrics: net price and whether it is a credit or debit, max profit and max loss per contract (omitted when unlimited), return on risk, annualized return, probability of profit, breakevens, days to expiration, IV rank, expected value, and the widest leg's bid-ask spread.
Here is an illustrative example with made-up round numbers, not a real result. Say ChatGPT returns an iron condor on a hypothetical stock trading at $100, selling the $90 put and $110 call and buying the $85 put and $115 call, for a $1.50 credit. The row would show max profit of $150 per contract, max loss of $350 per contract (the $5 wing width minus the credit, times 100), breakevens at $88.50 and $111.50, and a model probability of profit, say 65%. Read those together: in this example you risk $350 to make $150, and roughly one time in three the model expects the trade to lose money, sometimes the full $350.
Probability of profit is a model estimate derived from option prices, not a forecast. Returns are shown next to the maximum loss for a reason; a high annualized figure on a short-dated trade usually comes with a large loss relative to the credit when it goes wrong.
Limits worth knowing
OptionClaws is a scanner, not a broker. ChatGPT can find, compare, and explain candidates, but the tools are read-only and nothing places a trade; you check the quote and enter any order yourself. There are no alerts, backtests, or trade journal behind the chat either.
- Data is refreshed intraday and is a snapshot, not a live streaming feed. Confirm the quote at your broker before trading.
- Scans are rate limited to 10 per minute, and each returns at most 25 rows. Narrow the filters rather than asking for more pages.
- Nothing ChatGPT or OptionClaws returns is investment advice. The scanner does not know your account size, positions, or tax situation.
Frequently asked questions
- Can ChatGPT trade options for me?
- No. With OptionClaws connected, ChatGPT can run scans, pull option chains, and explain the results, but every OptionClaws tool is read-only. Nothing places, modifies, or cancels an order; you trade at your own broker.
- Is ChatGPT's options data accurate without a connector?
- Treat it as unverified. Without a data connection, ChatGPT has no access to current option chains, so strikes, premiums, and implied volatility it mentions are recalled from training data or made up. Numbers that come back from an OptionClaws tool call are from market data refreshed intraday.
- Do I need ChatGPT Plus to use OptionClaws?
- Adding OptionClaws from its ChatGPT listing is the simplest path. The alternative, a custom connector created in Developer mode, is offered on Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise, and Edu plans. Separately, running scans needs an OptionClaws trial or subscription.
- Which strategies can ChatGPT scan for?
- All 23 strategies OptionClaws supports, including covered calls, cash-secured puts, naked puts, bull and bear credit and debit spreads, iron condors, strangles, straddles, butterflies, calendars, diagonals, and married puts. Ask ChatGPT to list the filters for a strategy if you want to see every option.
- Can ChatGPT use my OptionClaws watchlist and saved scans?
- Yes. A scan can be limited to your watchlist, and ChatGPT can list and re-run scans you saved in the OptionClaws web app. Creating or editing saved scans and the watchlist happens in the web or mobile app.
- How many results does a scan return?
- Fifteen rows by default and up to 25. Each response also reports how many trades matched in total, so if the list is truncated, tighten a filter instead of paging.
