What IV rank measures

Implied volatility (IV) is the annualized move the options market is pricing into a stock. On its own, an IV of 40% says little: it is high for a utility and low for a small biotech. IV rank fixes that by comparing today's IV with the stock's own range over the past year.

The formula is IV rank = (current IV minus the one-year low) divided by (the one-year high minus the one-year low), times 100. An IV rank of 0 means IV is at its lowest level of the year. An IV rank of 100 means it is at its highest. An IV rank of 50 means it sits exactly halfway between the two extremes.

The IV used on these pages is a 30-day at-the-money implied volatility, so every stock is measured at the same horizon and a stock with only short-dated options is not compared on a different footing.

IV rank vs IV percentile

IV percentile answers a different question: on what share of the past year's trading days was IV lower than it is today? An IV percentile of 80 means IV closed below today's level on 80% of the days in the lookback.

The two numbers usually move together but can disagree sharply after a single spike. Picture a stock whose IV sat near 25% all year, jumped to 90% for two days around a surprise announcement, and is now back at 35%. The spike stretched the one-year range so much that IV rank reads only about 15. IV percentile, which counts days rather than distance, correctly says that 35% is higher than almost every day of the year.

  • IV rank is about distance: where today sits between the year's low and high.
  • IV percentile is about frequency: how often IV has been lower than today.
  • When the two disagree, look for a one-off spike or collapse in the past year.
  • Neither number says which way the stock will move. They describe how much movement the options are pricing.

How traders use IV rank

Premium sellers, who write covered calls, cash-secured puts, credit spreads, and iron condors, collect more for the same strike distance when IV is high relative to its history. Many of them screen for an elevated IV rank so the premium they collect is large compared with that stock's normal level. The tradeoff is that high IV usually has a reason, such as an upcoming event, a sharp selloff, or real uncertainty, and the stock may well move as much as the options imply.

Option buyers look at the other end of the table. A low IV rank means long calls, long puts, straddles, and debit spreads cost less than usual for that stock. Cheap options can stay cheap, though, and a quiet stock can stay quiet through expiration.

IV rank also helps with context. A stock at the top of the table is one where the market expects unusual movement, which is worth knowing before holding shares or options in it, whatever the strategy.

Limits of IV rank

IV rank depends entirely on the lookback. A stock that was calm for a year can show a high IV rank at an IV that is still low in absolute terms, and a stock coming off a crash can show a low IV rank at an IV that is still high. Check the IV column alongside the rank.

IV also rises into scheduled events and drops right after them. A high reading ahead of an event can fall away the next day even if the stock barely moves. The numbers on this page are as of the close and do not tell you whether an event is coming.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good IV rank?
There is no universally good value. Readings above 50 mean IV is in the upper half of its one-year range, and many premium sellers look for that. Readings below 25 mean options are cheap for that stock, which matters more to option buyers. What counts as useful depends on the strategy and on why IV is where it is.
Is IV rank the same as IV percentile?
No. IV rank measures where today's IV sits between the one-year low and high. IV percentile measures the share of the past year's days with IV below today's. They agree most of the time and diverge after a single large spike or collapse.
How often are these tables updated?
The tables on this page reflect the most recent market close. Inside the OptionClaws scanner, IV rank, IV percentile, and every other filter are refreshed intraday.
Can IV rank go above 100 or below 0?
Not as defined here. If today's IV sets a new one-year high, it becomes the top of the range and IV rank reads 100. A new one-year low reads 0.
Why does a stock with a high IV rank still have a low IV?
IV rank is relative to the stock's own history. A stock that has been very calm can post a high IV rank at an IV that would be low for most other stocks. Compare the IV column across rows to see absolute levels.
